The future of a country is found in its children. How we educate these children is of supreme importance to the future of our country. Humanists consider that a child’s education cannot be measured only by the number of facts that they can retain in their heads or by their ability to perform complicated mathematical operations, as important as these abilities are for our children to understand the physical world around them. The future of a country is found in its children For us education should be considered in a holistic way. Education has 3 important aspects; intellectual, physical and emotional or the mind, the heart and the body. In addition we consider the spiritual side of education to be supremely important. We propose to transform the National Curriculum. We strive to build a future society characterised by non-violence and this non-violence starts from the early years of education. Education for non-violence is a fundamental premise upon which our education system will be based. Our children, apart from learning the facts of reading, writing, mathematics, science, languages and humanities will start to learn from a much more experiential point of view. Our curriculum will be re-designed to allow children to learn through experience, will be allowed opportunities for freedom of expression, will be educated from a global point of view. We will open the minds of all our children to the wonderful expressions of humanity around the world, the wonders of different civilisations and cultures. History, instead of glorifying war will focus on non-violence and the contribution of people towards the overcoming of suffering and towards progress. Education should be free for our children through to Undergraduate level
Our children will be educated about the different ways that human beings have found to become spiritual and how to remain open-minded in a world that promotes cynicism. Our education will not be based on religion. Faith based schools will have to educate their pupils with an open attitude to alternative faiths and atheism. Physical education and sport in schools will not be considered from the point of view of competitiveness where winning is everything and losing is failure. Sport and physical education is the opportunity to have others push us to excel. It is about how to learn a physical skill and improve it over time. It is about how to work with others in a team. It is also about learning how the body works from the experiential point of view and learning the benefits of keeping our bodies in a good condition. To summarise, we propose a radical re-design of the school curriculum to educate our children in a much more holistic way. We will underpin education with the principles of non-violence. Education should be free for our children through to Undergraduate level. For those who don’t wish to study academic pursuits the ability to study more convocational subjects will be available. The quality of education will not vary depending on where one lives in the country. We will reward our teachers well, giving them the support they need to do their jobs well without overburdening them with bureaucracy. |
